TEFL In-House

An in-house training program provides the means to have everyone hear the same message at the same time. First and foremost, it has to be emphasized that adult learners are special in what they bring into the classroom (including the language classroom). The unique contributions of a mature learner include considerable motivation, the ability to take charge of their own lives, experience and cognitive maturity. Curiously enough, as will be demonstrated, all four markers are both advantageous and potentially hindering for mature learners.

In addition, an in-house training program can become the perfect setting to form teams of individuals who are working well beyond their job description to accomplish something that contributes to the TEFL course. Team assignments can be based upon readings and discussions in class and offer the opportunity for individuals to build on what they have learned and experienced first hand. The motivation of learners to go beyond the status quo is a fundamental part of any in-house training program.

Another advantage of establishing an in-house training program is that it offers great flexibility in terms of scheduling classes. Many firms choose class hours that do not conflict with work schedules and many have established a policy where study time is set up as being half on company time and half on employees' time.

There is also a significant cost advantage to setting up an in-house training program. Ten to 20 individuals can be trained in a focused and extensive course of study.
